Navy Secretary Questions Delays in Weapons Manufacturing

Says routine mismanagement takes advantage of taxpayer money.

U.S. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro spoke during a presentation at a San Diego naval conference this month about extensive delays within weapons contracting, questioning whether they were profit-driven rather than project-motivated.

The manufacturing of weapons in the United States is a profitable business. The Pentagon regularly contracts certain companies to create expensive equipment and machines. Recently, companies have delayed the delivery date of certain weapons, with some requesting more money to complete their contracted orders.

Secretary Del Toro said, “Through initiatives like the Taxpayer Advocacy Project, I have directed our contract community and the Office of General Counsel to ensure that we will leverage all legal means at our disposal to ensure that the American people are also getting what they paid for.”

“We must endeavor to ensure that contracts with the Navy are delivered on time and on budget,” he said. “The global strategic situation demands it.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Del Toro as he seeks to ensure the Navy receives the equipment and machinery it needs on time and on budget from contractors.
  • For discernment for leaders in the Pentagon as they assign and award military contracts.
  • For members of Congress as they deliberate appropriations for U.S. military aid and defense.
